What is breast implant surgery?

Breast augmentation places an implant behind each breast to increase volume and improve shape or symmetry. The implant sits either behind the breast tissue or partly behind the chest muscle, inserted through a short incision that is usually hidden in the crease under the breast.

Implants change size and upper-breast fullness. They do not lift breasts that have dropped significantly; that needs a breast lift surgery, sometimes done at the same time.

Who is breast augmentation suitable for?

You may be a suitable candidate if you:

feel your breasts are small for your frame and this has bothered you for some time
have lost breast volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss
have a noticeable difference in size between your breasts
are in good general health, not pregnant or breastfeeding, and at a stable weight
understand that implants are not lifetime devices and may need further surgery in future

It is usually better to wait if you are planning a pregnancy soon, are still breastfeeding (a gap of 3 to 6 months after stopping is generally advised), or are going through a major change in weight. Your choices: implant type, size, placement and incision

No single implant suits everyone. These decisions are made together at your consultation, based on measurements of your chest, the amount of breast tissue you have, your skin quality and the result you want.

Silicone gel implants

The Aesthetic Studio uses cohesive silicone gel implants that are US-FDA approved and CE-marked. Cohesive gel holds its form and feels soft to the touch. If the outer shell ruptures, the gel tends to stay in place, which is why a rupture may cause no symptoms and is checked for with imaging.

Round or anatomical (teardrop) shape

Round implants give more fullness in the upper part of the breast. Anatomical implants are shaped to slope more gently from top to bottom. The right choice depends on how much breast tissue you have to cover the implant and on the look you prefer.

Size and profile

Volume is only part of the decision. Profile, meaning how far the implant projects forward, must also fit the width of your chest. Choosing an implant wider than your chest, or too large for your tissues, raises the risk of rippling, visible edges and stretching over time. Above or below the muscle

Below the breast tissue (subglandular): a simpler pocket; usually suits women with a reasonable amount of breast tissue.
Partly below the chest muscle (submuscular or dual-plane): gives more soft-tissue cover over the upper implant, which can make edges less visible in slim women; recovery can be more uncomfortable at first.

Incision position

The most common incision sits in the fold under the breast (inframammary fold), where the scar is usually concealed. An incision at the lower edge of the areola is sometimes used. Your surgeon will explain which approach suits your anatomy and why.

Both add volume, but they suit different goals.

Preparing for surgery

Routine blood tests and, depending on your age and history, a breast ultrasound or mammogram before surgery.
Stop smoking well before surgery; smoking slows healing and raises the risk of complications. Your surgeon will tell you how long.
You may be asked to pause some medicines and supplements that affect bleeding.
Arrange for someone to take you home and help you for the first day or two.
Buy the surgical bra recommended at your consultation.

The procedure

Breast augmentation is usually performed under general anaesthesia and takes about 1 to 2 hours. Your anaesthesia plan is confirmed at consultation. Most patients go home the same day; an overnight stay is advised in some cases.

Through the planned incision, a pocket is created in the chosen plane, the implant is placed, its position and symmetry are checked with you sitting up on the table, and the incision is closed in layers. A dressing and a supportive bra are applied before you wake.

Recovery timeline

Everyone heals differently. Your own instructions will come from your surgeon; this is a general guide.

Time after surgery	What to expect
First 2–3 days	Tightness, swelling and soreness, eased with prescribed pain relief. Rest at home, walking gently around the house.
Week 1	First review visit. Many patients return to desk work at 7 to 10 days. No lifting, no driving until you can move freely without pain.
Weeks 2–6	Wear your surgical bra day and night for about 6 weeks. Avoid heavy lifting, upper-body exercise and high-impact activity.
After 6 weeks	Most normal activities, including exercise, resume once your surgeon clears you.
3–6 months	Swelling settles and the implants soften and settle into their final position. Scars continue to fade over 12 months or more.

Important: Contact the clinic straight away if you notice one breast becoming much more swollen or painful than the other, fever, redness, or discharge from the wound.

Realistic results

Breast augmentation can give a lasting change in size and shape that many women are pleased with. It is still worth knowing that:

Your breasts will continue to change with age, weight change and pregnancy.
Breast implants are not lifetime devices. Many women keep their implants for many years, but some will need further surgery to replace or remove them.
Small differences between the two sides are normal, because no two breasts are identical before surgery.
Implants will not correct significant drooping on their own.

Risks, complications and long-term safety

Every operation carries risk. Knowing the risks is part of making an informed decision, and Dr. Bharathi will go through them with you in detail.

General surgical risks

Bleeding or haematoma, infection, delayed wound healing, thickened or widened scars, blood clots, and reactions to anaesthesia.

Implant-specific risks

Capsular contracture: the scar tissue that naturally forms around an implant tightens, making the breast firm, misshapen or painful. It is one of the most common reasons for further surgery.
Rupture: the implant shell can tear. With silicone gel implants this may cause no symptoms ("silent rupture"), so periodic imaging may be advised.
Implant position problems: the implant may move, sit too high or low, or rotate.
Rippling or visible edges: more likely in slim women with little breast tissue.
Changes in nipple or breast sensation: which may be temporary or permanent.
Breastfeeding: many women breastfeed after augmentation, but some have difficulty. Discuss your future plans before surgery.

BIA-ALCL

Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is an uncommon cancer of the immune system, not of breast tissue. It develops in the scar capsule around an implant, usually years after surgery. It has been reported far more often with textured implants than smooth ones. The usual sign is new swelling, fluid or a lump around the implant well after healing; if you notice this, see your surgeon promptly.

Systemic symptoms ("breast implant illness")

Some women with implants report symptoms such as tiredness, joint or muscle pain and difficulty concentrating. The cause is not established, and some women report improvement after their implants are removed. If you have an autoimmune condition, or notice such symptoms after surgery, talk to your surgeon.

Further surgery

You may need another operation in future to treat a complication, replace a ruptured implant, or change size. Revision options include implant exchange and removal of the scar capsule (capsulectomy).

Breast screening when you have implants

Implants do not stop you having mammograms. Tell the radiographer you have implants, so special displacement views can be taken to show as much breast tissue as possible. Ultrasound or MRI may be used alongside mammography, and to check for implant rupture.

Most people with desk jobs return in 7 to 10 days. Physically demanding work needs longer.

Can I have a mammogram with implants? +

Yes. Tell the radiographer about your implants so displacement views can be used.

What is BIA-ALCL? +

An uncommon lymphoma that can develop in the scar capsule around an implant, more often with textured implants. It is usually treated by removing the implant and capsule.

Can I change or remove my implants later? +

Yes. Implants can be exchanged for a different size or removed, with or without a breast lift, in a revision operation.

How long after pregnancy should I wait? +
